Affiliate marketing is a strategy where individuals can partner with a business or another individual to promote and sell their products and/or services.  We often refer to affiliates as partners or publishers, and you might also see the term “JV”, which stands for Joint Venture partner. Over the past 10-15 years affiliate marketing has grown tremendously and has allowed many people to escape the daily grind of a job becoming successful as their own boss. This prospect is one factor that continues to drive the growth of this industry.

However, is there really a future in Affiliate Marketing?

My answer is a definite YES!

But… affiliate marketers need to provide value, and strategies used in affiliate marketing will need to develop as technology grows.

What do the Experts Say?

As you can imagine there are some experts who think affiliate marketing will die a slow death. The overwhelming response from marketing experts sees a definite growth in the industry by providing value, sticking to tried-and-true approaches, and adapting new technologies to promote products and services.

Devon Kirk, Marketing Manager for GetPayroll & Simon Payroll App
“I believe that affiliate marketing will slowly and then more rapidly decline in the years to come. Instead, I think the focus will shift heavier to retarget marketing and redirect email marketing”

Adam White, Founder at SEOJetLink
My prediction is that the majority of affiliate sites will be weeded out of Google’s search results over the next 10 years and that in order to effectively run an affiliate campaign you will need to think way outside the box.”

To be honest, these opinions represent a minority, but they make some good points. As an affiliate marketer, you need to be aware of new trends in marketing, which includes how Google’s search engine works.

Sean Si, Founder of SEO Hacker and Qeryz
“I think mobile affiliate marketing is very interesting if mobile websites and payment gateways can make affiliate purchasing (or purchasing in general) to have a seamless, friction-less experience for mobile.”

Zac Johnson, Founder of Blogging.org
“Affiliate marketing is always going to be here (in one form or another) and it’s always going to make money as long as you continue to focus on the value provided and user experience.”

Karl Kangur, Partner and Editor in Chief at MonetizePros
“Authority sites are on the rise and I believe that’s a good thing for the industry.”

Tung Tran, Founder of Cloud Living
“Organic traffic still converts the best, but I’d not ignore social media traffic though. Networks like Pinterest and Instagram have grown significantly and proved to be very effective for lots of businesses.”

When looking through these quotes there are a few things that stand out:

  1. Changes in Google search engines will have an impact.
  2. You need to focus on value provided.
  3. Authority sites (blogs) are important.
  4. Social media traffic can’t be ignored.

How to Succeed as an Affiliate Marketer

As shown above, two very import aspects of success evolve around value provided and being seen as an authority. It’s also important to be aware of how changes in technology, especially when introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI), effect marketing strategies. Some of these changes can have a negative impact. However, embracing these changes and using them can have an extremely positive effect on the success of your business.

Value and Authority

When choosing products or services to promote and developing marketing campaigns, you’ll want to keep one thing in mind: “How can I help my customers”. Instead of trying to sell anything that comes along, make sure that what you are selling will help your customer. In addition, provide useful information, free products, or links to free products, to help your customers grow and succeed.

Become an authority on the products or services you intend to sell by demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of related subject material. This is accomplished primarily through blogging, which is a very important aspect of becoming successful.  Your blogs can than be shared through social media channels, which helps you keep up with trends in how people interact digitally.

Keeping up with Technology

As mentioned, Google is constantly developing their search engine capabilities through the use of advanced AI based algorithms. As a result, it’s important to keep up with those changes and adapt. For example, websites that are optimized for mobile experience will have a higher ranking than sites that do not.

On the bright side, you can also take advantage of AI based trends in your own marketing strategies. While this may seem very technical and complicated, there are actually a lot of tools and services available that can be easily incorporated into your marketing.

  • MarketMuse – Uses AI to analyze blog content and provide an analysis.
  • AI-Writer – Helps with content creation through the use of AI algorithms.
  • Exceed.ai – Used to provide personalized communication with an AI-powered sales assistant.

There are many more products and services available, some free and some paid.

Another major trend in newer technology to help with affiliate marketing are the use of chat and message bots. While most of these products are not actually AI, they are still powerful for increasing conversion rates and keeping customers. In addition, there are AI-powered bots that take automated interaction with customers to a much higher level.

Conclusion

Even though some experts don’t see a future in Affiliate Marketing, there is powerful evidence that this industry will continue to grow and excel into the future. In addition, bringing value, providing authority, and adapting new technologies will ensure your success as an affiliate marketer.

To Your Future,

Kangur’s assessment that authority sites are on the rise is interesting. I’ve always been a bit of a pessimist when it comes to authority sites, SEO etc myself, due to the growing saturation, but clearly there are people making it work.

      • Lonnie Wall

I think that because of the saturation people may be looking more at quality and honest information. I tend to avoid blogs and sites that are just copying content from other sites. Will be interesting to see how things play out. Thanks!

Interesting and thought provoking post Lonnie. It is interesting to see now how much technology has made things easier in relation to internet marketing. Having had a play in the past in 2011 and the issues that caused me ha, it’s refreshing to have some of the “push button” technology that makes it easier to develop sites and pages. However I guess Technology waits for man or woman!

      Kind Regards
